Kyoto summers are among the hottest and most humid in Japan. And yet Kyoto's tranquil summer evenings can be surprisingly cool and refreshing. But if it's still not cool enough for you, never fear: a lively, open-air beer garden, or beer hall is just around the corner. This month, be sure to get out and enjoy the evening atmosphere of Kyoto during the boisterous and relaxed season-summer. Have a beer and have fun! Outdoor Gardens

Takashimaya Super Beer Hall (until 9/23): all-you-can-drink & eat course: 3,200 yen (2,900 yen for women); this giant downtown rooftop beer garden, on the top of a department store, is really lively; 17:30-22:00; southwest corner of the Shijo Kawaramachi intersection; Tel: 252-7984.

Indoor Halls

Asahi Super Dry Hall: this impressive beer hall has everything you could want for a great night of air-conditioned relaxation, drinking and eating; 11:30-22:00; west side of Kawaramachi, south of Sanjo; Tel: 221-1882.

Kyoto Pig & Whistle: one of Kyoto's best known night spots; you are sure to make friends here; on the north side of Sanjo, east of Keihan Sanjo Station; Tel: 761-6022.

The Hill of Tara: authentic Irish pub and restaurant: good food, great atmosphere; Guiness, Kilkenny and other imported drinks; on the north side of Oike, east of Kawaramachi; Tel: 213-3330.

Shinmonso
Summer Special Dining Plan with Maiko
Shinmonso is a fine Gion district ryokan, located in one of the most traditional and beautiful areas of Kyoto. Until 8/31, Shinmonso offers a special dinning plan in their Japanese-style beer garden. Spend an evening enjoying a fine meal while being entertained by a real maiko (talk with them, watch them dance, take photos of them). Dinner courses: Otegaru Course (2,625 yen), Osusume Course (3,675 yen) and Miyabi Course (4,725 yen).
