The spring equinox day in March (March 21st this year) has a special meaning in Kyoto and is known as ''Traditional Industry Day.'' A variety of events and exhibitions are organized which showcase Kyoto artisan's highly skilled techniques.

Kyoto Saryo is one of the venues for the event and exhibits a wide range of traditional craft items. The first half features the younger generation artisans who have inherited the spirit and techniques of Kyoto's craftsmanship. The latter half introduces the works of middle-career artisans who have been chosen as ''Craftsmen for the Future'' by Kyoto City.

The Traditional Industry Day in Kyoto Station Building

From March 2nd to 15th an exhibition called ''Imano Wa 2018'' will be held, exhibiting innovative traditional crafts utilizing traditional industry techniques to meet the present lifestyle. A co-organized exhibition is the ''Kyoto's Traditional Industry Wakaba Craft Exhibition,'' which showcases crafts created by up-and-coming young artisans who will inherit the authentic traditions in Kyoto.

From March 17th to 30th, the middle-career artisans who will lead Kyoto's future industry will introduce their items made using their highly skilled techniques. Enjoy their traditional work filled with various new inventive ideas!

The grand prize winner Daiginjoshu Sake

Referring to a way of life fundamental to Kyoto culture and nurtured by the city's artisans, the word ''Bifu'' can be translated to ''lovely ways'' or ''beautiful customs.'' The KYOTO BIFU exhibitions at Kyoto Station Building introduce ''Bifu'' in its various forms, both contemporary and traditional. Particularly, they focus on the works of artisans who embody this philosophy and, in turn, have come to represent the Kyoto way of life.

Graphical Illumination PLUS
on the Big Stairway

The artistic graphical illumination on the big stairway began in 2012 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Kyoto Station Building. The Kyoto Station Building will be romantically illuminated using special effects together with approx. 15,000 LED lights on the main stairway (125 steps) and special graphical images along with elegant music. Enjoy the artistic seasonal illuminations of Kyoto.
